Many people with disabilities say that life without their service animals is unthinkable. This is also true for Latino’s who utilize the skills of a service animal. While public institutions and places of business are required to admit service animals without question, some public schools, restaurants, hotels, retail stores, taxi cabs, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities claim they cannot handle the disruption of a dog in a busy classroom or their places of business. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), privately owned businesses that serve the public are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The ADA requires these businesses to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed. As service dogs have become more prevalent, Latino businesses need to know how to legally handle these animals and their human counterparts. Padres Abriendo Puertas has developed a community based training program in English, Spanish & ASL that will teach Latino based business in the Greater Hartford Area about service dog laws and service dog etiquette.
